The Underwriting Specialist is responsible for ensuring compliance and implementation of accounting LIFE and General underwriting policies, processes, and procedures in line with the overall business strategy and objectives. This includes matters relating to collection of premiums, management of branch expenses, and underwriting.

Key Responsibilities:

Life Underwriting Duties:

1. Create new client accounts in the system for Individual Life business.

2. Manage policy premium collections through direct debits, M-Pesa, bankers orders, and local check-offs.

3. Provide after-sales service, including loan repayment adjustments, policy revivals, quotations, and statement printing.

4. Reconcile local check-off payments and follow up on outstanding check-offs.

5. Assist branch intermediaries and liaise with the head office as necessary.

General Underwriting Duties:

6. Ensure all accepted policies/risks comply with underwriting guidelines and regulatory requirements.

7. Provide excellent customer service to both internal and external clients by delivering the required underwriting services and documents.

8. Ensure premium and data capture within set standards.

9. Review, prepare, and dispatch renewal notices.

10. Ensure compliance with the company’s general underwriting-related communication.

General and Life Finance Underwriting Duties:

11. Issue receipts promptly and ensure their dispatch to clients.

12. Prepare banking slips and ensure daily collections are banked daily or the following day.

13. Prepare and ensure the daily collections report is in order and sent to the head office.

14. Ensure file copies of receipts are filed, and hard copies are forwarded to the head office.

15. Process premium adjustments promptly.

16. Generate and reconcile agents, brokers, and direct clients’ ledgers, queries, and monthly statements.

17. File monthly agents, brokers, and direct clients’ statements.

18. Manage the branch’s petty cash imprest.

19. Prepare monthly and annual withholding tax returns and commission reports.

20. Ensure other administrative work at the branch is performed as per the company’s expectations.

21. Provide excellent customer service to both internal and external clients by delivering prompt services that meet and exceed their needs.

Key Deliverables:

  1. Achieve underwriting profitability.
  2. Ensure customer satisfaction.
  3. Deliver high-quality service.
  4. Ensure timely premium debiting.

Job Requirements:

  • – Undergraduate degree in a business-related field or equivalent
  • – Professional qualifications in Accounting, CPA, ACCA, or Insurance (added advantage)
  • – Minimum 1 year of relevant experience
  • – Strong analytical, influencing, and accounting/reporting skills
  • – Excellent client relations, negotiation, and presentation/report writing abilities
  • – Proficient in technical insurance knowledge and skills
  • – Effective communication, interpersonal, customer service, and IT skills
  • – Demonstrates integrity, reliability, transparency, professionalism, teamwork, and quality
