Amref Health Africa, the largest African-based international health development organization, is seeking a highly motivated and dynamic Technical Director to lead their global Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) program. This is a strategic and technical leadership role that will provide overall direction and oversight to the organization’s SDoH portfolio.
Amref Health Africa, headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, has been driving community-led and people-centered health systems across 35 African countries for over 60 years. As a champion of Universal Health Coverage (UHC), the organization works directly with communities and governments to build strong community health systems.
About the Role:
As the Technical Director: Social Determinants of Health at Amref Health Africa, you will be responsible for providing strategic and technical leadership to the organization’s global SDoH program portfolio. You will work closely with teams across Amref to implement the corporate technical assistance strategy, invest in people-centered health systems, and drive innovative approaches to address the social determinants of health.
Key Responsibilities:
- – Provide technical expertise to strengthen the implementation of SDoH models in Amref’s country offices and partner countries
- – Develop, implement, and oversee program technical strategies, service delivery models, protocols, guidelines, quality, and standards
- – Build knowledge, thought leadership, and develop programs in key SDoH areas, including income and social protection, health education, unemployment, working life conditions, food insecurity, housing, climate change, and more
- – Identify and grow multi-country projects, enhance cross-country learning, and translate learnings into policy and practice
- – Oversee the design and execution of all SDoH programs, ensuring alignment with strategic objectives and donor requirements
- – Represent Amref on high-level panels, media interviews, and other forums to position the organization and grow its thought leadership agenda
- – Advise on best practices regarding UHC and SDoH to ensure high-quality healthcare delivery
- – Advocate for SDoH agenda-setting with Ministries of Finance, Health, and other key stakeholders
- – Support program sustainability and pursue new funding opportunities for SDoH initiatives
Requirements:
- – Master’s degree in international development, public health, social sciences, or a related field
- – Minimum 10 years of experience in global development and technical knowledge of SDoH policy, advocacy, and governance
- – Strong understanding of social determinants of health and their impact on population health outcomes
- – Proven experience in developing strategies, conceptualizing, planning, and implementing projects or programs
- – Strategic thinker with an international perspective and good understanding of development issues impacting Africa’s health agenda
- – Experience in research, technical support, and stakeholder engagement in SDoH areas
- – Highly collaborative leadership style, with experience managing teams in a multicultural environment
- – Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to facilitate high-level meetings and prepare clear reports
