Research Engineer, Computer Vision, Google Research

Google is hiring a Research Engineer specializing in Computer Vision to join their Google Research team in Africa. This role involves translating theoretical models and concepts into AI solutions relevant to the African continent.

Responsibilities

• – Develop rapid prototypes to assess the feasibility and performance of potential AI solutions
• – Design robust pipelines for taking AI models from research to production-level systems within African organizations
• – Collaborate on sourcing, cleaning, and preparing datasets unique to African contexts for AI training and evaluation
• – Build tools and APIs to help researchers and stakeholders interact with and understand AI model outcomes
• – Contribute to open-source AI initiatives in Africa, create documentation, and train others on developed AI software systems

Minimum Qualifications

• – Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience
• – Typically 2 years of experience with software development in Python or other AI-relevant programming languages, or 1 year with an advanced degree
• – Experience contributing to research communities, including publishing in forums (e.g., CVPR, NeurIPS, ICCV/ECCV, BMVC)
• – Typically 2 years of experience with Computer Vision algorithms and tools (e.g., TensorFlow)

Preferred Qualifications

• – PhD in Computer Science, a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience
• – Knowledge of linear algebra, statistics, and calculus relating to AI algorithm principles
• – Experience in developing accessible technologies
